Our Founder, Calvin Navarro Bennett
Cal Bennett was born in Oakland California on November 25, 1925,
and moved to Monona, Iowa where he was raised and educated. He moved
to Visalia in 1943 and managed Kertel’s Fountain, on the corner of
Center and Court.
In August of 1964 Cal decided it was time to go into business for himself.
He borrowed $495.00 from his Aunt Cleo Kertels, and the rest is history.
Cal was his only employee. From day one he built his office furniture business
on the principles of excellent customer service.
The business thrives today because Cal never gave a second thought to
delivering products in the manner most convenient to customers. Even as the business
grew Cal could be seen delivering desks (yes desks) and office supplies
from the trunk of the family's 1945 black Dodge sedan. Cal’s ability to put people
before all other considerations showed not only in his growing business, but
also in the loyalty and friendships he formed with his staff. People liked working
for the man whose motto was: "if
you can’t have fun stay home".
Cal's business grew rapidly over the next 39 years. He constantly
reminded those around him that this was not just through his own hard
work, but largely due to his loyal and
trusted employees. Cal had wonderful relationships
with business owners and their employees in Tulare, Kings and Fresno
Counties.
The impact of his industry leadership and trust-based business
relationships was not lost on the community.
In 1988 Cal received the Business of the Year Award from the Visalia
Chamber of Commerce, and in 1999 Cal was named Man of the Year for
his many years of selfless contributions and service to Visalia.
Cal's personal life was just as fulfilling. He was an avid trout
fisherman, loved the mountains, and enjoyed backpacking to remote streams
and lakes. He enjoyed serving his community, and was
an assistant Scout Master for many years. He also coached the Visalia
Cardinals Little League team for 10 years.
After 78 rewarding years of life, Cal had "Gone
Fishin' " for the last time in December of 2003. The legacy of
service and integrity he lived is also the foundation on which Cal
Bennetts continues to grow.
